We went to see Pink Martini at the Edmonton International Jazz Festival. Having been fans for a long time we were really excited but not prepared for how fantabulous it would be. Hearing the music live was totally awesome. The various instruments they use have the most unique sounds. Many of their songs are in different languages—Arabic, Spanish, French and even Japanese. "Because everyone in the band contributes in the writing and arranging of songs, the repertoire is wildly diverse. At one moment, you feel like you’re in the middle of a samba parade in Rio de Janeiro, and in the next moment, you are suddenly in a French music hall of the 1930s or in a palazzo in Napoli. It’s like an urban musical travelogue.”
Highly recommend that if you ever get the opportunity to see them live, that you run to do so. You won't be disappointed. It was a lot of fun to hear the background of the songs. China Forbes, the lead singer-songwriter, wrote "Eugene", about a guy she met at a party who asked for her number and then never called.
You can just bet he is kicking himself.
